Joel completed his undergraduate degree in Integrative Biology and Japanese Language at UC Berkeley in 2007. He is currently a first-year Master's student at the University of Tokyo, Japan. He is interested in the role of hybridization and polyploidy in speciation, and is investigating this topic in the Crepidomanes minutum species complex (Hymenophyllaceae).
