Internet
Multiple 512k DSL connections provide Internet access to the Station. A new wireless network allows station visitors to connect from almost anywhere on the station grounds. Ensure that you bring a wireless card with you for your laptop.
Computing Equipment
The new IT CENTER AND LIBRARY will replace the old library. This center will include a server for file-sharing and storage use as well as more reliable internet connections across the station grounds. A complete wired/wireless network across the station will allow for an intranet and better communications.
Bringing your computing equipment
It is highly recommended that you bring your own laptop and wireless card to the station. By 2006, our new IT-Laboratory Building will be open and will have expansive new conference and library rooms for you to work on your laptop.
Station Communications
Phone
Phone calls are expensive in French Polynesia (even local calls). The Station phones are limited to local calls. For international, visitors can purchase a calling card locally. Skype is also available to station users and recommended as an affordable to call the United Sttes but be aware that we limit its use because of bandwidth constrictions on our Internet connection.
Post
The post office is in Maharepa and the closest mailbox is on the outside of ARE supermarket. The OUTBOX in the main dorm is emptied sporadically by visitors and staff who are going to the post office. Incoming mail is picked up by Station staff from Maharepa every day and left in the INBOX. If you have packages sent to you, they will probably be stopped in customs and import duties can be very high (see details about shippping in Facilities section of website).
