As part of its mission the Station is committed to education on different levels.   The first is to foster undergraduate and graduate education in the form of field courses and independent research projects carried out on site. The second is to develop and carry out local outreach and internship programs for university students, schools, and the public in French Polynesia.

Field Courses

The Gump Station is a perfect facility for field courses in a variety of disciplines and from numerous institutions. Classes pay a flat rate per student per day. The (optional) meals are prepared by a local family (pictured with the UCLA class below) run “catering service” which offers a nice blend of Polynesian and European cuisine. Field courses are coordinated by Station Manager Frank Murphy who has many years of experience in running field courses here and elsewhere.

Examples of past and present field courses are:

  • UCB - Archeology Field School
  • UCLA Marine Biology Field Methods
  • Glendale Community College (AZ) Coral Reef Ecology
  • Shasta College
  • St. Olaf College - Undergraduate Research: Island Biology in Polynesia
  • University of Wisconsin Stevens Point

Graduate Research

Graduate students from any institution/country are welcome at the Gump Station.  For funding opportunities see PEARL Graduate Student Research Fellowships

Outreach Programs

The new Atitia Center is an initiative to provide a dynamic interaction between Gump Station scientists and the local community.
