Conference on Terrestrial and Marine Interactions:
Land Use Planning to Promote Marine Conservation
Timothy Duane (UC Berkeley)
The conference presents and reviews work conducted
by a graduate class from the UC Berkeley Department
of Landscape Architecture and Environmental
Planning. Poster and oral presentations are
followed by a discussion among scientists, students,
community representatives, and government agencies
responsible for planning and natural resource
management.
The aims are to:
- Inform the impacts both biologically and
economically of sedimentation and nutrient
loading on coral reefs in Moorea
- Model areas of high risk to erosion using
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to inform
zoning regulations of the Plan General D’
Amenagement (PGA)
- Inform the outcome of implementing the Plan
General D’ Amenagement (PGA) on Moorea
through modeling of the buildout using Geographic
Information Systems (GIS).
- Suggest ways to control sedimentation and
nutrient loading on coral reefs at a regional
and site-specific level.
